Puff Bar is back, and its new synthetic nicotine-based e-liquid could push Congress or the FDA to address the long-festering issue of vaping products made with nicotine not derived from tobacco.

The gray market Puff Bar device and its shadowy owners have succeeded in the retail market by ignoring FDA regulations and building a huge distribution network in traditional tobacco outlets like convenience stores and gas stations. In the process, Puff Bar has become the epitome of evil to anti-vaping groups like the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and Truth Initiative.

The paper by Hopkinson et al (1) provides unique and important data on smoking prevalence and COVID-19 symptoms, but their conclusion does not reflect the data well. [...] The study includes over 150,000 people with self-reported COVID-19 symptoms and over two million without such symptoms. It also includes data on over 25,000 people who were tested for SARS-CoV-2 and their test results. Based on our analysis of these more relevant data, we interpret the study differently. Our conclusion would be “these data are consistent with smokers having an increased risk of symptoms such as cough and breathlessness, but a decreased risk of having SARS-CoV-2 infection”.

On this year's No Smoking Day, Royal London states that mon-smokers could be eligible for lower rate premiums if they have not smoked tobacco, or used any nicotine replacement products including e-cigarettes, for 12 months.

According to the insurer, a smoker aged 50 would pay nearly triple every month what a non-smoker of the same age would have to pay for the same sum assured, £29.13 compared to £82.48, base on level single life cover, over a 25-year term for £150,000 sum assured.

Member states, through the Council of the EU, recently asked for a range of new products to be contained within the TED. It includes e-cigarettes which contain no tobacco but do contain nicotine. However, there are also e-cigarettes with no nicotine in them and their fate is unclear.

But why should a directive that has, until now, been only for tobacco be extended to include products which contain neither tobacco nor nicotine? Isn’t this a step too far?

The EU's constitution, enshrined in the Treaties of the European Union, is very clear that before proposing any legislative initiative, some key questions must be addressed.

In line with data from other Canadian provinces indicating that certain restrictions just led to increased smoking rates, the Canadian Vaping Association (CVA) is warning that the policy changes recommended by the QCTC would have the same dire effect.

“The QCTC has recommended the following regulatory changes:

Prohibit flavors (except tobacco) in vaping products (however, flavors may be permitted in certified versions and sold as cessation aids in pharmacies)
Limit the nicotine content to 20mg/mL of nicotine [...]

[...] The planned shops are part of a wave of nearly 200 cannabis retailers moving through the state licensing pipeline, many clustered around major destinations. Pot businesses are lining up to open in Provincetown, around TD Garden and nearby historic sites in downtown Boston, near large universities, and other popular spots that routinely attract tens of thousands of visitors. But with public consumption of recreational pot banned under state law, the proliferation of marijuana shops in these busy areas raises an obvious question: Where are all those [...] supposed to actually use the stuff?

Pediatric primary care clinicians “frequently” screened parents to obtain their smoking behaviors but “rarely” provided smoking cessation counseling, researchers wrote in PLoS One.

“Our [pediatric] patients are often affected by the decisions and choices of their parents, making it important that we provide education, resources and support to the parents,” Tregony Simoneau, MD, a pediatric pulmonologist at Boston Children’s Hospital, told Healio Primary Care. “In order to do this well, we need to understand the needs of the parents.”

I’ve been a smoker since the days when some doctors still smoked openly and kept ashtray’s not just in their consulting rooms but in the reception, too.

I have known of the dangers carried in the little white sticks pretty much all my life. But more fool me, I continue to smoke, having long ago given in to my addiction and accepted it for what it is. Now you can accuse me of having my cake and eating it as it were, if you like, but I still have the ability to get outraged by claims cigarette manufacturers make about the relative safety of their products.

To examine the chemical composition of JUUL pods collected from a convenience sample of 16 high schools in California to identify possible consumer modification or counterfeit use. Using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry, we quantitatively analyzed the nicotine, propylene glycol (PG), and vegetable glycerin (VG) in JUUL pods (n = 26) collected from California high schools and compared results to commercial 3% (n = 15) and 5% (n = 24) JUUL pods purchased online.

This interventional-cohort study tried to answer if people who smoke and choose an e-cigarette in the context of smoking cessation treatment by tobacco counselors in Flanders are achieving smoking abstinence and how they compare to clients who opt for commonly recommended (or no) aids (nicotine replacement therapy, smoking cessation medication). Participants were recruited by tobacco counselors. They followed smoking cessation treatment (in group) for 2 months. At several times during treatment and 7 months after quit date, participants were asked to fill out questionnaires and to perform eCO measurements.

The ADA, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and dozens of likeminded stakeholders are urging the Food and Drug Administration to prohibit menthol cigarettes and other nontobacco-flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and cigars.

“The public health and medical community have long been united in calling on FDA to use its authority under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act to issue product standards ending the manufacture and sale of flavored tobacco products,” the groups wrote in a March 3 letter to the agency.

Fewer children in Ireland are smoking tobacco but more are using electronic cigarettes, a new study has found. The report, which looked at school-aged children’s health behaviour between 1998 and 2018, found that fewer children were using substances three years ago than twenty years ago. It also found that more than half of children exercise regularly, more children are feeling pressured by school work and more children report feeling low.

Marlboro parent Altria is asking the Food and Drug Administration to help it spread the word that nicotine doesn’t cause cancer.

CNBC on Thursday obtained a copy of a letter Altria sent to the FDA asking the agency to help get the message out about nicotine as part of a proposed advertising campaign on the risks of tobacco use.

“We have received the letter and will respond directly to the company,” FDA spokeswoman Alison Hunt told CNBC in an email.
